Choosing Zuri Plastic Surgery ensures the highest standards in patient safety and care.
Not only does quadruple board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Alexander Zuriarrain hold hospital privileges at the most prestigious hospitals in Miami, FL, but Zuri Plastic Surgery is a fully accredited outpatient surgical facility. At Zuri, we have taken additional steps to meet rigorous standards and requirements to foster a safe environment for your health care through a process called AAAASF accreditation.
Accreditation assures the public that patient safety is a top priority in a facility. It is a voluntary process that hospitals, outpatient surgery centers, and other healthcare facilities go through to prove they meet specific standards set forth by an official accrediting body for cleanliness, safety, equipment, and personnel.
In the same way that board certifications inspire confidence in a surgeon's capabilities by holding surgeons accountable for their work, AAAASF accreditation provides an additional level of assurance that a facility truly cares about patient safety.
Before you have any type of surgery, you'll want to make sure that your procedure will be performed at an accredited facility.
There are four major national accrediting bodies in the United States. Established in 1980, the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities (AAAASF) specializes in accreditation of ambulatory surgical facilities. It also looks at procedures in an office-based surgery (OBS) setting and sets what is considered the "gold standard" for quality patient care.
Currently, about 2,400 facilities nationwide are AAAASF accredited.
AAAASF provides official recognition to only facilities that have met 100% of its high standards. An accredited facility must comply with the most stringent set of applicable standards available in the nation and meet the strict requirements for facility directors, medical specialist certification, and staff credentials.
Accreditation ensures the staff is qualified, trained, and experienced. The operating facilities are clean and fully equipped, including having all of the personnel, equipment, and training needed to respond quickly and appropriately in life-and-death situations.
Patient safety is an ongoing effort. To stay accredited, a surgeon and his staff must submit to regular inspections, complete periodic self-surveys, and provide thorough records of their policies and procedures to retain accreditation.
AAAASF requires a safe and clean surgical environment that meets stringent sterilization standards.
Accredited facilities require specific equipment and instruments, including life support devices, and that all are appropriately cleaned, sterilized, and maintained. All machines and monitors must function safely and correctly. Operating rooms must be organized and designed to meet specific design standards, from ensuring proper lighting and backup power to the kinds of materials required to ensure surfaces can be kept sterile. They must also allow enough space to allow personnel and equipment needed to respond to emergencies.
Accreditation by AAAASF ensures that the whole team is fully licensed and prepared to respond to any issues.
To earn accreditation, not only must surgeons be highly qualified and trained, the staff must be as well. Surgeons must be board certified and have hospital privileges for any procedure they perform. Nurses, anesthesiologists, technicians, and other OR team members play integral roles in surgical procedure safety. Accreditation ensures that they are fully licensed and prepared to respond to any issues that may arise.
Accredited facilities must also have clear, effective procedures in place for handling emergencies.
AAAASF accreditation requires that policies and procedures for recordkeeping, patient care, and privacy are legally compliant. It also involves peer review and tracks data for thousands of individual cases. Facilities undergo regular re-evaluation to ensure they are maintaining standards.
In addition to meeting all state certification requirements, an AAAASF-accredited surgical facility must be open for several months before it is eligible for accreditation to ensure it is reputable and well-run.
