What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that alters the structure of the nose by reshaping soft tissue, cartilage, and bones in order to address cosmetic concerns.

The procedure can improve crookedness and nose bumps or change the overall shape and proportions of your nose. Along with these corrections, in the hands of a skilled surgeon, rhinoplasty can also enhance the balance of your features and provide harmony for your entire face. Understandably, Rhinoplasty is one of the most commonly performed plastic surgeries; your nose is like the centerpiece of your face. For some, the ability to transform their nose to their preference can be life-changing.

Benefits of Rhinoplasty

Our Miami Rhinoplasty procedure offers multiple benefits, both cosmetic and functional, making it a popular choice for those looking to improve the appearance of their nose or correct structural issues. The benefits include:

Types of Rhinoplasty

There are several different types of Rhinoplasty Miami patients can have performed depending on their needs. Dr. Zuriarrain will be sure to cover every possibility and customize the procedure to your particular needs.

OPEN RHINOPLASTY

Open Rhinoplasty is performed by making a tiny incision between the nostrils to release the skin and allow the nose to be “open” during the surgery. While this may sound intimidating, it gives the surgeon the greatest access to the nasal structures. This method also allows them to make more complex corrections with the best possible results. Because the incision is so small, returning the skin and tissue to their proper place is quite simple.

NON-SURGICAL OPTIONS

For those who would like a less-invasive, less-costly option, or perhaps as a trial run before committing to surgery, there are nonsurgical ways to change the shape and contour of the nose. This is sometimes referred to as a liquid rhinoplasty and involves the use of dermal fillers. Fillers can be injected into the nose to smooth or tighten certain areas in order to provide desired corrections. This can produce similar aesthetic results to a surgical rhinoplasty, however, it is only temporary and typically lasts about nine months.

REVISION RHINOPLASTY

Revision rhinoplasty is designed for patients who are dissatisfied with the results of a previous rhinoplasty or who have experienced complications such as breathing difficulties or asymmetry. As a corrective procedure, revision rhinoplasty requires advanced skill and experience to address both functional and cosmetic issues. Dr. Z carefully evaluates each patient’s unique concerns and previous surgical outcomes to create a customized plan that enhances both form and function.

SEPTOPLASTY

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure that focuses on correcting a deviated septum. The septum is the wall of cartilage and bone that separates the two nostrils, and when it is misaligned, it can cause breathing difficulties, snoring, or chronic nasal congestion. Septoplasty straightens the septum to improve airflow and alleviate these symptoms, providing patients with long-lasting relief and enhanced nasal function.

TIPLASTY

Tiplasty is a specialized form of rhinoplasty that addresses only the nasal tip. This procedure is ideal for patients who are satisfied with the overall shape of their nose but want to refine a bulbous, drooping, or overly large nasal tip. Tiplasty involves reshaping the cartilage in the nasal tip to achieve a more defined and aesthetically pleasing result. Because it does not involve any alterations to the nasal bones, tiplasty typically involves less downtime and recovery.

Who is a Candidate for Rhinoplasty?

If there is any area of the face that grabs attention, it is the nose. It is central to everything, and when it appears to be disproportionate to all the other facial features, it has a detrimental effect on an individual’s self-esteem. The ideal candidate for rhinoplasty is someone who is in good overall health, has realistic expectations, and desires to enhance their nose for aesthetic or functional reasons. Candidates include:

Aside from this, there are many others who seek the expertise of Dr. Zuriarrain for his Miami Rhinoplasty procedure rather than for aesthetic reasons. They may have birth defects, they may have had a serious injury, or they may have breathing problems. There are many procedures in rhinoplasty, or a nose job, to rectify any issues a candidate may have.

What Issues Can Rhinoplasty Correct?

Rhinoplasty is a versatile procedure that can correct a variety of aesthetic and structural concerns, including:

  • Crooked Nose: Address nasal asymmetry and deviation.
  • Nasal Humps or Bumps: Smooth out irregularities along the bridge of the nose.
  • Wide or Flared Nostrils: Reduce nostril size for better facial balance.
  • Large or Small Nasal Tip: Reshape the nasal tip to a more proportionate size and shape.
  • Deviated Septum: Correct a deviated septum to improve airflow and breathing.
  • Overly Large or Small Nose: Adjust the overall size of the nose to achieve facial harmony.
  • Post-Traumatic Deformities: Correct shape or function affected by previous trauma or injuries.
  • Functional Breathing Issues: Address structural issues that impede proper breathing.

HOW IS RHINOPLASTY PERFORMED?

While a rhinoplasty procedure may appear to be less complicated than other forms of plastic surgery, it does take a lot of skill to get things right. Incisions are made down the length of the columella, which is the area between the nostrils.

Dr. Zuriarrain will already discuss this during the consultation and the patient will understand which approach he will take. Once either incisions are made, then cartilage, bone and tissues can be reshaped to obtain the right sizes and proportions. In most cases, the Piezo Ultrasonic rhinoplasty device will be used for refined, exact, and low-impact sculpting of the bone structure. During the Rhinoplasty Miami plastic Surgeon, Dr. Zuriarrain will straighten a deviated nasal septum in cases with breathing difficulties, correcting this problem. Being an outpatient procedure, these will be conducted under general anesthesia, and the nose job procedure can last up to three hours as a standalone procedure. If being done in tandem with other plastic surgery, then this time may be extended.

Following Rhinoplasty Procedures

Patients will be advised to move around when they return home. This can reduce the likelihood of blood clots forming. Oral painkillers may be prescribed to control pain, puffiness and possible headaches for the first few days.

Miami Rhinoplasty patients may find their nose stuffy when trying to breathe, lots of bruising and possible bleeding. These symptoms usually fade within ten days, and many patients who undergo rhinoplasty with Dr. Zuriarrain are back at work a week after the operation. There will be the need for a follow-up visit, and it will be recommended not to do any physical exertion for up to six weeks. To see the full results can take a few months. This is the reason why there are many individuals who seek the help of Dr. Zuriarrain for revision rhinoplasty, to correct the mistakes from a previous operation.

Rhinoplasty FAQS

Is rhinoplasty painful?

This procedure is almost always performed under general anesthesia, so no pain is experienced during the procedure. Most patients report mild pain or only discomfort during the first few days after surgery.

Is rhinoplasty with the Piezo device less painful?

For many patients, using the Piezo Ultrasonic device reduces the instance of pain even more, and we find there is often even less swelling or bruising than a traditional sculpting method. This is a great option for patients with delicate skin or who bruise easily.

What are the risks associated with rhinoplasty?

With a skilled surgeon and a healthy patient, there is very little risk involved with rhinoplasty. Possible side effects can include those associated with anesthesia, as well as swelling, bruising, infection, and changes in the sense of smell or in breathing.

Is rhinoplasty permanent?

Yes, rhinoplasty surgery is considered permanent. Aging or environmental factors can, of course, alter the long-term appearance of the nose, but the changes that result from this surgery are lifelong.

How long after rhinoplasty can I wear glasses?

Some lightweight glasses can be worn 1-2 weeks after surgery; however, patients with heavier framed glasses may need to wait up to 4-6 weeks. There are certain products available that can be worn with glasses to take pressure off of the nose.

Can I combine rhinoplasty with other procedures?

Rhinoplasty can be easily combined with other surgical or nonsurgical procedures. Rhinoplasty can be performed along with minor treatments like dermal fillers or incorporated into something as major as a facelift.

How long after rhinoplasty should I sleep on my back?

Since it is a very important part of the recovery and healing process, we recommend sleeping on your back with an elevated head for at least 1-2 weeks after surgery.

What is a good age to get rhinoplasty?

There is no specific, ideal age to get a Rhinoplasty. However, patients must have reached the point where their noses are fully developed, which is usually between 16-18. Typically before 35-40 is optimal so that the skin still retains elasticity and can recover well, although there is no true upper limit.

How much does rhinoplasty cost?

The cost of a rhinoplasty procedure varies greatly depending on the type of rhinoplasty performed and whether other surgeries or treatments will be included.

Will my insurance cover the cost of rhinoplasty?

When Rhinoplasty is performed for cosmetic reasons, the cost is not covered by insurance. If the primary reason, or even in part, is due to breathing issues or to correct a documented past injury, part or all of the cost may be covered by insurance.
