Why Would I Need Eyelid Surgery?

The aging process, and its effects, are eventualities both men and women have to deal with. As we age, the facial muscles become weaker, and we cease to produce the necessary amounts of collagen to keep our skin looking youthful. The primary area which shows age is the face. We begin to notice wrinkles by the eyes and deep creases and lines in the brow as our skin begins to lose elasticity.

Dr. Zuriarrain understands how any patient’s self-confidence can receive a severe shock due to the effects of aging. Anyone is a possible candidate for a blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) procedure. We will work together, after your thorough consultation from Dr. Z, to establish your beauty goals and how best to achieve them.

What is a Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, sometimes known as eyelid surgery, is a type of cosmetic surgical procedure that removes excess skin from the eyelids and addresses other aesthetic concerns in the eye area. The procedure can correct both upper and lower eyelid issues.

Benefits of Blepharoplasty

Sagging and wrinkled eyelids can not only make you look older than you are, but they can also make you appear tired or drowsy when you’re not.

Blepharoplasty can provide a younger appearance as well as give you a more awake, alert look. With a blepharoplasty Miami patients can expect benefits to include:

  • Tighter, more lifted eye look
  • Brighter eye appearance
  • Correcting vision in very droopy eyelids

Types of Eyelid Surgeries

Choosing the right type of eyelid surgery depends on the specific concerns you want to address. Whether you are dealing with drooping upper eyelids, under-eye bags, or seeking to create a more defined eyelid crease, different techniques are available to help you achieve a refreshed and youthful appearance. Below are the most common types of blepharoplasty performed at Zuri Plastic Surgery.

Upper Blepharoplasty

Upper blepharoplasty focuses on correcting drooping or hooded upper eyelids. As skin loses elasticity with age, it can sag over the eye, impacting your appearance and potentially obstructing your vision. During the procedure, excess skin and fat are removed or repositioned, and the underlying muscles are tightened. This results in a lifted, brighter eye area that enhances facial balance.

Best for:

  • Sagging upper eyelids
  • Hooded eyes
  • Vision obstruction caused by eyelid skin
  • Tired or aged appearance

Lower Blepharoplasty

Lower blepharoplasty targets the area beneath the eyes, addressing puffy under-eye bags, dark circles, and wrinkled skin. By removing or redistributing fat deposits and tightening the skin, the eyes appear more youthful and less tired. Incisions are typically made just below the lower lash line or inside the lower eyelid to minimize visible scarring.

Best for:

  • Under-eye bags
  • Sagging or wrinkled lower eyelid skin
  • Puffiness and dark circles
  • Tired, droopy appearance

Double or “Asian” Blepharoplasty

Double blepharoplasty creates or enhances the natural crease in the upper eyelid, which is sometimes absent in patients of Asian descent. This procedure is designed to give the eyelids more definition while respecting each patient’s unique facial characteristics.

Best for:

  • Lack of a natural eyelid crease
  • Desire for a more defined eye contour
  • Enhancing eyelid symmetry

Am I a
Candidate for Blepharoplasty?

Dr. Zuriarrain understands how any patient’s self-confidence can receive a severe shock due to the effects of aging. Anyone is a possible candidate for a blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) procedure. We will work together, after your thorough consultation with Dr. Z, to establish your beauty goals and how best to achieve them.

Before Eyelid Surgery

Before Dr. Zuriarrain performs any plastic surgery in Miami, there will be a consultation in the Miami, FL clinic. This is held to determine the goals and expectations of the patient, and to also deliver any options or alternatives for the procedure. In some instances, blepharoplasty will be performed along with a brow lift.

With a thorough physical examination, Dr. Zuriarrain will check skin elasticity, fat deposits, or the extent of hooding or drooping over the eyes. He will discuss the site locations for the incisions, and how they will be hidden in place like below the lash line, in the natural creases of the upper lids, or inside the lower eyelid.

He will run through medical histories to make sure there are no medications, herbal supplements, nicotine products or recreational drugs being used. Once this is resolved, he will describe in detail what will happen in the preliminary steps of the procedure and answer any questions you may have.

During Blepharoplasty Procedures

Patients can have either local or general anesthesia, and the surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure. If the eyelid surgery is being performed as a standalone operation, this takes around two hours. During your blepharoplasty Miami plastic surgeon Dr. Zuriarrain will make incisions in the areas discussed during the consultation for each area that will be receiving attention. Once these are made, then excess fat will be repositioned and tissues lifted and placed in the optimum positions. Any excess skin or tissue will be trimmed before incisions are closed and gauze used to cover areas.

After Blepharoplasty Procedures

Dr. Zuriarrain will advise patients to walk around for the first couple of days after their blepharoplasty. This promotes healing and helps reduce the chances of blood clots forming. The majority of Miami blepharoplasty patients are able to return to regular activities after around ten days.

Most of the swelling and bruising will diminish during this time, although patients are advised not to undertake anything too physically taxing during the first few weeks. Any scarring will fade after a few months. Light cosmetics may be used to conceal any remaining bruising. When in the sun, use sunglasses for further protection.
